Andhra Pradesh: 94-year-old professor’s unwavering passion for teaching inspires many | TOI Original

A 94-year-old prof. Chilukuri Santhamma Garu who teaches physics at Centurion College, has defied old age and health issues to pursue her passion. Yes, she did have an option to retire but her passion for physics would not let her rest. She pursued B.Sc Honors in Physics and completed D.Sc in Microwave Spectroscopy from Andhra University. In 1945, she received a gold medal for physics from Maharaja Vikram Deo Varma when she was a student at AVN College in Visakhapatnam. Later, she joined Andhra University as a lecturer in 1956 and never seemed to have quit thereafter. After her retirement in 1989, she shifted her focus to research and joined the university again as an honorary lecturer. She is a bearer of many tags – lecturer, investigator, professor. As a philanthropist, she donated her house to Vivekanand Medical trust. The professor has won several awards for her analysis on Atomic Spectroscopy and Molecular Spectroscopy. It’s not just physics but she is also well versed in Puranas, Vedas, Upanishads. She has also authored a book on spirituality, ‘Bhagavat Gita – The Divine Directive’, which is an English version of Bhagavat Gita slokas. Having undergone knee surgeries, she supports herself on crutches and yet continues to inspire any young minds with her determination and dedication. Today, she travels 60 km from Vizag to Vazianagaram to teach at the college.
