Enforcement Directorate conducts searches at Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut’s residence in Mumbai | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials reached Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut‘s residence early morning to conduct searches at his home in Bhandup. ED is likely to ask Raut to accompany them for questioning in the money laundering case related to the redevelopment fraud of Goregaon’s Patra chawl.
Earlier Raut failed to appear before the ED for further statements despite two summons. Two days ago, a witness in the case Swapna Patkar reported to the police that she was getting threatening calls asking her to withdraw her statement to ED against Raut.

Sanjay Raut’s wife Varsha and Swapna had a land parcel in Alibaug that was purchased under their joint names. ED suspects that the land was purchased through the money diverted from Patra Chawl fraud by arrested businessman Pravin Raut, a friend of Sanjay Raut, through Patkar’s estranged husband Sujit Patkar.
In April, the ED had attached a flat in Mumbai owned by Sanjay Raut’s wife Varsha and the Alibaug land parcels. ED had alleged that these properties were purchased through the money diverted by Pravin Raut.
During recent searches at the premises of Patkar, the ED found the Alibaug land documents. Earlier in her statement to the ED, Swapna told them that her name was used for purchasing the land although she had no ownership rights on it and the land parcels ownership are in complete control of Sanjay Raut.

Recently, the ED recorded Sanjay Raut’s statement in the case at their zonal office in Ballard Estate area of South Mumbai. The ED called him again for further clarification after questioning Patkar and Swapna, but he requested for exemption till August 7 due to ongoing Parliament sessions. But ED refused his request.
The ED investigating a Rs 1,200 crore money laundering case related with Patra chawl redevelopment fraud at Goregaon involving Housing Development and Infrastructure Ltd (HDIL) group, its promoters Rakesh Wadhawan, his son Sarang and Pravin Raut.
The HDIL’s subsidiary Guru Ashish Construction took work of redevelopment of Patra chawl after entering into agreement with the land owner Mhada (state government agency) and residents. Pravin Raut was one of the shareholder in Guru Ashish and he received Rs 50 crore after he exited the company. Pravin Raut also received Rs 45 crore from a land deal at Palghar from HDIL group. In February, the ED arrested Pravin Raut in the case and chargesheeted him. Last year they had attached Pravin Raut’s properties with Rs 72 crore.
