Favorites & Longshots Worth A Wager

Derby day has arrived, as sports bettors worldwide are looking to cash in on “the most exciting two minutes in sports” with the running of the 148th Kentucky Derby. Starting positions have been set, and a post time of 6:57 p.m. ET means that the first leg of the Triple Crown will likely conclude before the clock strikes 7.

The 2022 Kentucky Derby odds have seen plenty of movement in the lead up to the race, and BetOnline oddsmaker Adam Burns shared which horses currently serve as the biggest liabilities for the books.

“Is always hard to know who the book will need in the end for a horse race, let alone the Kentucky Derby the biggest bet race of the year when there are so many last minute bets. But one thing is for sure we do not want Messier!”

“He has taken more money and bets than any other horse in the field, and its not stopping. We opened him at 10-1, and that has been bet down to 7-1 on fixed odds, but who knows where this will settle by race time.”

Named after hockey sensation Mark Messier, Burns hopes that the action is driven by NHL fans hyped up with the recent start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“Let’s just hope these are all just hockey Mark Messier fans and he does not score this time”

The Kentucky Derby Favorites

A pair of horses sit atop of the odds boards, with Epicenter and Zandon each listed at +500 to win the race outright.

Epicenter had been listed further down the boards, but a favorable post position and his easy victory in his most recent outing at the Louisiana Derby further has made him a favorite target of bettors heading into the weekend.

Co-favorite Zandon has been equally impressive, but some question his experience. Despite last month’s win at the Grade 1 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland, the 3 year old only has four races under his belt.

Each horse will be ridden by a jockey with derby winning experience, with Zandon paired with 2019 winning jockey Flavien Pratt (Country House), and Epicenter featuring the 2013 winner Joel Rosario (Orb) at the reigns.

Messier sits just behind the pair at +700, but his second place finish at the Santa Anita Derby might actually open up some value for bettors here. Poor tactics likely cost him the win, but veteran jockey, and 2018 Kentucky Derby winner, Mike E. Smith could take the race with the proper adjustments.

Also, lets not forget that Messier is a product of legendary trainer Bob Baffert. While a suspension prevents Baffert from participating in this year’s race, he managed to transfer a few of his top performers to trainer Tim Yakteen last month in efforts to skirt the ban. Messier has proven to be the cream of that crop, and while Baffert’s name will not formally be attached to the thoroughbred, expect the horse to bring some of that Baffert magic to the track.

Yakteen also took over the training for Taiba, the horse who just so happened to edge out Messier in Santa Anita for the win. The pair sit at +700 odds, but wager counts reflect that Messier is the more popular choice for bettors.

Kentucky Derby Longshots

Bettors and pundits all seem to have a strange love for Cyberknife, and at +2000, its easy to see why.

The horse was considered by many to be immature as a 2 year old, but his winning performance at the Arkansas Derby proved that the horse has the poise and speed needed to win in this setting.

As the odds suggest, a win is not to be expected, but he could be worth a look for those seeking a high-paying trifecta ticket.
