In a first, A 26-year-old carpenter was served five years’ imprisonment in the first conviction under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. A POCSO Court announced the sentence of five years on Afzal and also imposed a penalty of Rs 40,000. Amid rising concerns of forced religious conversions in the state, the Uttar Pradesh government cleared an ordinance in 2020 to curb forcible or “dishonest” religious conversions. This ordinance was ratified by the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in 2021
